Nutrition Guidelines: What RRPS follows for: Elementary | Middle | High school students and during School Activities

Students who participate in school lunch or breakfast are assured to received a nutritional balanced meal. More variety (as established by dietary guidelines) is easy to achieve through school menus. Also, the federally subsidized meal is often less expensive than a meal of equal nutritional value prepared and packed at home. With school lunch students learn good nutrition habits that provide a basis for better health throughout their lives.

School meals contain a variety of foods and offer students exposure to new foods. The better-nourished student will generally have better attendance, be more attentive and have more energy to cope with school day opportunities.

The federal government mandates how many calories & nutrients each child’s meal has based upon their age group. Our Food Service program currently offers a nutritionally analyzed five-week cycle menu containing up to thirty-seven different entrée choices for lunch.

In the elementary school’s, a student has the opportunity to choose a meal containing an average of 722 calories of which no more than 24.5% of those calories came from fat. Our current lunch menu in the elementary schools currently exceeds the Recommended Daily Allowances for these nutrient groups:

  • Vitamin A - 426%
  • Vitamin C - 333%
  • Calcium - 178%
  • Iron - 108%

A healthy breakfast!Breakfast is served in ALL cafeterias daily before school. A nice variety of hot and cold breakfast items are served each weekday. Breakfast burritos, bagels, and juice are also sold a la Carte each morning in our middle and high schools.
  • Reduced priced Breakfast - $.30 in all schools
  • Regular priced Breakfast - $.75 in elementary schools
  • Regular priced Breakfast - $1.00 in secondary schools

Breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day!
Studies have shown that students, who start their day with breakfast, perform better in their studies and athletics.

Meals and/or food items
are available at each campus for fund raisers (please contact Mark Willis @ 892-1784 for more information). Presentation cooking is offered at R.R.H.S. & R.R.M.H.S. throughout the year. This is an opportunity for students to participate in an upscale meal cooked to order.

Choices include
    • Philly Steak Sandwich & dessert $4.00
    • Hot Chicken Caesar Salad & Garlic Bread $4.00
Here is where you can find all the information you need to know about Food Services in our schools.

Rio Rancho parents (at selected schools) now have an easier way to pay for their children's meals at school...online! We have chosen to use an online service called MealTime Online (www.mymealtime.com) to provide parents the opportunity to make credit card deposits into their children's cafeteria account. Parents can also view the student's purchase history with this service.

Here are the steps to getting started with this service:
  1. Create an MealTime Online parent account: Click on the "Create New Account" link and enter a UserName and Password that you will use to log into MealTime Online. The UserName and Password must be at least 6 characters in length.
For example, UserName: jsmith Password: map2ku
  2. Add your student(s):
    1. Log in to your MealTime Online account (use the UserName and Password you created in Step 1)
    2. Click on the "Add New Student" link
    3. Select New Mexico
    4. Click the "+" in front of "Rio Rancho Public Schools" and then click on your school
    5. Add your student by entering their First Name and Student ID. The student ID number can be found on your child's student ID badge. The system will only accept valid student ID numbers. If you do NOT know your child's student ID number, they must go to the front office to purchase a replacement ID for $3.00.
  3. Make a deposit: Click on the "Make Deposit" link to make a deposit into a school account. Click on the "View Details" link next to your student's name to view their cafeteria account balance and purchase history.
Note: Online deposits are processed each night at 4:00am, and will be automatically reflected in the student's account according to the district's transfer schedule. Deposits made after 4:00am will be processed the following night at 4:00am.
Sources of Food! The National School Lunch Program is partially funded by the federal government, based on the income of each child’s family. The average subsidy per child in our district is $1.40 for lunch and $1.05 for breakfast. Adult lunches are not subsidized at all, that’s why they pay more for the same size portion.

Prices for breakfast and lunch are reviewed yearly. There are many factors that effect our school district’s ability to break even.
  • Rising food and labor cost
  • Number of school sites and employees
  • Equipment purchases and replacement
Each school districts funding is unique. Rio Rancho is very affluent in comparison to most school districts in the state. This has an adverse effect on the amount of funding receive. Food cost ($.84 per meal) is the largest portion of each meal served (breakfast & lunch), followed by labor cost ($.80).

To decrease food waste in the breakfast and lunch programs, we utilize the “offer vs. serve system”. Students must select and entrée, then they choose between one to four additional items. Students are allowed to self-serve many side dishes, giving them control over portion size.

Rio Rancho Public Schools works with the Sodexo Management Team to determine a suggested price for each meal. The Rio Rancho School Board makes the final decision after public discussion. Prices are only increased when necessary to maintain the program’s ability to cover all of it’s cost. The Food & Nutrition Services fund is not supported by the General Fund and is a non-profit entity.
