Dear Parents and Guardians,
The Rio Rancho School District is fortunate to offer your child(ren) the Student’s Achieving For Excellence (S.A.F.E.) Before and After School Program during the 2010-2011 school year. Currently the program is offered at all ten elementary schools.
The program will stress support for student learning, various activities, support to families, and general community involvement. The program is under the Rio Rancho Public School Student Services Department.
Through the efforts of our S.A.F.E. Before and After School Program, we will continue to address the academic and social areas, as well as safety for our school age children before and after school. We will continue to provide innovative ideas that assist you and your children with opportunities to enhance their overall development and academic success.

1. KACM (Keep a Clear Mind) Program (parents must sign permission slip for student participation):
Keep a Clear Mind (KACM) is a take-home drug education program for elementary school students in grades 4-6 (ages 9-11) and their parents. KACM is designed to help children develop specific skills to refuse and avoid use of "gateway" drugs. The program consists of four weekly lessons based on a social skills training model: Alcohol, Tobacco, Marijuana, and Tools To Avoid Drug Use. Each lesson introduces the topic for the week and is followed by a sequence of five activities to be completed at home with a parent.
The activities include answering a simple question about drugs, listing reasons not to use specific drugs, writing "No" statements to resist social pressure to use drugs, selecting from a list of alternatives the best ways to refuse and avoid drugs, and completing contracts to refuse and avoid drugs. Small incentives such as folders, stickers, and bookmarks are provided to students who return their completed lessons within the indicated period. Parent newsletters prompt parents to reinforce their children for practicing saying no to drugs and provide specific behavior tips for communicating with children about how to avoid drug use.
2. PYMP (Protecting You, Protecting Me) Program (parents must sign permission slip for student participation):
Protecting You/Protecting Me® (PY/PM) is a 5-year, classroom-based, alcohol-use prevention curriculum for elementary students in grades 1 through 5 (6–11 years old) and high school students in grades 11 and 12 (16–18 years old). Designed to reduce alcohol-related injury and death in our Nation’s youth, PY/PM:
- Is proven to change students’ knowledge about their brains and personal development
- Improves elementary students’ vehicle safety skills: their ability to protect themselves when they have no option but to ride with an adult who is not alcohol-free
- Increases high school students’ perceptions of the risks associated with underage alcohol use
- Improves high school students’ teaching and presentation skills The curriculum:
- Incorporates the latest research on human brain development
- Focuses on the immediate risks of using alcohol before age 21
- Includes parental involvement activities The program can be taught by trained high school students, as well as by teachers. The curriculum philosophy is zero tolerance on the use of any substances, including the under-age use of tobacco and alcohol.
