GraduateGraduate Equivalence Diploma: GED TESTING INFORMATION

Age Requirement
The minimum age is 16 years old.  New Mexico’s Compulsory School Attendance legislation requires all persons under the age of 18 years old to be enrolled in a public school, private school, home school or state institution.  NMSA 1978, § 22-12-2.  The student’s parent/guardian is responsible for the student’s school attendance, and a student’s failure to be enrolled and attend school may result in enforcement actions taken against the parent/guardian pursuant to the Compulsory School Attendance laws which may result in monetary fines and/or imprisonment.

A student currently enrolled in a District school who is under the age of 18 may be exempt from compulsory school attendance requirements if the parent/guardian gives written, signed permission for the Student to leave school because of a hardship, and the Superintendent, or her designee has approved the hardship request in writing.  The Superintendent, or her designee shall review the parent/guardian’s hardship request within a reasonable time after all pages of this Application, as well as any supporting documentation, are submitted to the District’s office.  The Superintendent, or her designee, however, is not required to make a decision within a certain period of time.  The Superintendent’s, or her designee’s decision to grant or deny the hardship request is within the Superintendent’s, or her designee’s sole discretion, is final, and is not subject to review or appeal.

If the Student’s hardship request is approved by the Superintendent, or her designee and the Student is at least 16 years old, the Student may request approval from the Superintendent, or her designee to apply for the general educational development (“GED”) certificate.

If the Hardship Application is Approved:
The parent will be notified by the Superintendent’s office that the application has been approved.  The parent will come to the District Office to sign the Underage Permission Form (UPF).

In order to obtain an Underage Permission Form, the following steps are required:

  1. The parent/guardian must withdraw the student from the current or last school attended.  The school should provide a Withdrawal Form and a Student Exemption from Compulsory Attendance Form.
  2. Contact the office of Student Services and check on the availability of the Superintendent, or her designee for signature (896-0667, ext. 129).
  3. The student will come to District Office accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and bring the following documents:
    • School Withdrawal Form signed by a parent/guardian, student and any necessary school Administration.
    • Student Exemption from Compulsory Attendance Form signed by the Principal, Counselor, Associate Superintendent, or Executive Director of Student Services.
    • All GED candidates must present two (2) forms of identification.
      1. One form must be a Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s license, state-issued ID, U.S. Passport).  It must indicate name, date of birth, and signature.
      2. One form must verify two of the following: name, date of birth, social security number or signature.
    •  Valid picture I.D. of parent
If the Hardship Application is NOT Approved:
The parent will be notified in writing by the Superintendent or her designee.

Home School Students
Home-schooled students must verify age at time the Underage Permission Form is issued; therefore, only items 3-5 above apply.
