High School Graduation Requirements

A total of 29 credits are required to graduate from Rio Rancho High School. Some of these credits you will have earned in the 9th grade prior to coming to RRHS. Starting with the class of 2010, students will be required to enroll in an Advanced Placement class or a Dual Enrollment class or a Cyber class as a requirement for graduation. They must pass one of these three classes in order to graduate.

  • English/Social Studies = 8 credits
    • English 9/Geography English 9/New Mexico History
    • English 10 World History
    • English 11 US History
    • English 12/Economics English 12/Government
  • Mathematics = 4 credits
  • Science = 4 credits
    Two of the following three must be completed: Biology, Chemistry or Conceptual Chemistry or
    Physics
  • Communication Skills = 1 credit to be satisfied through the course Communication Skills, Pathfinder, Business Management/Communications or approved Business course, MCJROTC, Acting II or the third level of a World Language.
  • Physical Education = 1 credit (see * below)
  • Technology elective = 1 credit
  • Fine Arts elective = 1 credit
  • Electives = 9 additional credits

It is a state requirement that all students take and pass the New Mexico High School Competency Exam in order to obtain a diploma. It is Rio Rancho High School policy that students will take a math and science course each year they are in attendance at Rio Rancho High School. Transfer students will be evaluated according to RRHS transfer procedures. *If you are taking a course other than PE to meet the PE credit please check with your counselor to be sure it has been approved.

Grade Classification:
A student’s grade classification is determined by the number of high school credits earned. Minimum credit for the following grades at RRHS are as follows:

  • Senior 21 credits
  • Junior 13 credits

A student transferring to RRHS from a high school program whose graduation requirements are less rigorous may be classified using a pro-rating system.
